the hbcu scholarship fund

Each year, we raise scholarship funds to support Newark students on their path to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Whether they're high school seniors, GED recipients, or trade school students, our goal is to help them pursue their first undergraduate degree.

Are You Eligible for Support?

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be pursuing their first undergraduate degree at an HBCU
     
  • Be one of the following:
     
    • A high school senior
       
    • A GED diploma recipient
       
    • A student enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year undergraduate program
       
    • A student enrolled in a vocational or trade school
       
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When can I begin the Scholarship Application?
A: Applications open April 1st each year.

Q: What’s the application deadline?
A: April 30th at 11:59 PM EST. Incomplete or late submissions will not eligible.

Q: Do I have to be enrolled in school to apply?
A: You do not have to be currently enrolled in school to apply, but you must show evidence from an accredited institution that you will be enrolling, and that the scholarship support you seek will be applied there.

Q: Are graduate students eligible?
A: No. The fund supports undergraduate education only.

Scholar spotlight

Chermya Pope - Tuskegee University

Major: Animal Poultry & Veterinary Science

Chermya is a freshman thriving in her transition to college life at Tuskegee. With a 3.5 GPA, she’s already taking advanced courses and participating in veterinary science clubs. She’s also earned certification through the NLTP training program as she explores career paths in animal care and veterinary medicine.

Kyle Marques Washington - Howard University / Rutgers

Major: Finance

Kyle began his journey at Howard University and returned home to Newark, where he found his stride. Now a junior at Rutgers with a 3.0 GPA, Kyle is focused on his goals, fueled by hard work and ambition. His growth and determination continue to make us proud.

College Prep Program & HBCU Bus Tour

The HBCU College Prep Program and Annual Bus Tour introduces students to more than 10 partner HBCUs across the East Coast, from Pennsylvania to Georgia. Throughout the experience, students attend workshops, build skills, and visit campuses that often become their future academic homes. 

Candidates are required to attend a series of preparatory workshops to strengthen their prospects for college admission including:

  • ACT/SAT Preparation
  • Financial Aid, Financial Literacy & Scholarships Resources
  • College Essay and the Academic Resume
  • Interview Skills, Dress for Success
  • College Orientation/HBCU Tour(s)

Eligibility Requirements

Students interested in participating in the HBCU Tour and college readiness workshops must meet the eligibility criteria below:

  1. A school referral from a teacher, administrator, or principal
  2. A student in his/her junior or senior year in high school. 
  3. A minimum GPA of 2.0
  4. Must have taken the ACT or SAT at least once by end of December
  5. A strong interest, motivation and desire to go to college, particularly an HBCU.
  6. Hard-working, resilient, responsible and committed students who love learning, growing, and who exhibit self-control and self-discipline.
  7. A student who has conducted community service or cares to give back to his or her community in a positive manner.
  8. A student who expresses his or her talents in sports, arts and culture, music, dance, civic or political involvement, etc.

The HBCU Bus Tour and College Readiness Program are only possible with the support of partners who believe in educational equity and real-world access. From providing meals and transportation to funding program materials and scholarships, your partnership can help shape a student's future.
